January 1st 2012 - Happy New Year everyone. 17 December 2011 - It's been a while since I posted. Lots on the plate at the mo and Christmas is nearly upon us. However there are a few things that need to be said. Some good, some not. So let's start with the good...... The Phoenix travelled to Dunedin in their 58th "Home" A League game. This game was sent to Dunedin by the FFA. Frankly, it was a gamble. The students had gone home after graduation and it was a wednesday night game. just over 4,000 attended as a result. if I were the FFA, I would not be discouraged. I would strongly recommend a game there next year around September/October and on a Saturday evening with say a 5pm kick off time. For me, that was all that was bad about the experience. I attended my 58th consecutive "home" game. I saw Paul ifill score his 22nd Phoenix career goal and surpass Shame Smeltz's previously held club record. I saw Nick Ward have a bad game and yet score a great goal all-be-it from an offside position. I got to meet one of the club saviours in Gareth Morgan whom is making a concious effort to mix and meet with fans. I believe he is trying to gage a feel for fans and establish some form of repore. It is an exercise which is proving popular and like the players and the club in general, gareth was not afraid to exchange views and pose for photos etc. well done to him for making such efforts. Terry too in the past have a similar attitude and it is good to see it continue. What can I say about Ben Sigmund? His performances of late have been of the highest quality. His runs forward - one resulting in pressuring an own goal, his passing has been brilliant and acurate. I have seen him doing back-heels, crosses, through balls, headers - everything and some. I believe he should lose the "Siggy" name tag and should be known as "Benaldo" - he has the touch of a Brazilian at the moment. Apologies to Daniel if this offends him. Daniel of course, is our number one Brazilian. Now, back to Dunedin. It was my first visit and what a visit. Sadly the other two members of the Official Daniel Fan Club were unable to make the trip at the last minute due to a serious hand injury to one. a shame as it was a fantastic experience for me. Dunedin reminds me of New Zealand of the late 60's early 70's. No attitudes, extremely friendly. The shopping and sites around the town leave plenty for everyone to keep busy and enjoy. I am quite blown away by the warm hospitality displayed. The stadium down there is aa real credit to the city and I urge the Phoenix board to instead of wasting time of going to Auckland, they should go to Dunedin. Bad timing is what kept the attendance down. Dunedin and Christchurch would both be my preferred places to travel to, if we have to travel around the country. At the moment, Dunedin wins it for me as it is fairly compact and everything is in walking distance. i cannot speak highly enough. Although there is no bus or train service from the airport to the city, due to lack of numbers justifying it, there are taxis - approx $90 or better still, Shuttles. I caught a ride back to the airport with O'Briens Shuttles for the princely sum of $25. It is a 30 minute drive approximately. A last word about the Brisbane Roar. I happened to meet them at the Airport on the way home. My plane left an hour before theirs. I found them to be gracious losers, friendly and polite. That goes for the manager and coaches and players. they were a genuine and real credit to their club. Last season, they played some of the best football ever seen in the A League, if not the best. This season, the only thing missing is a goalscorer. They posed for photos and chats without any hesitation and I'd like to thank them all sincerely. Hopefully, we might meet them in a Grand Final. Now to QPR, whom also miss a consistant goal scorer. Helguson was injured and did not play against Liverpool. Suarez was on form and other than a great defensive effort - especially from Cerny, QPR actually had a 20 minute second half spell in which they gave Liverpool a fright or two. A loss with credit. This weekend, it's Man United's vist to Loftus Road. If we play like we did against Chelsea, Man City etc, then hopefully we might give them a fright. They are beatable, just ask a certain Swiss team. Lastly, john "Gramps" Clifford has raised over 2,000 pounds for the Tiger Cubs. The club have recognised this at last. A brilliant cause and a good read. Please click on the various liks on this page to visit the site where you can order your copy - hopefully in time for Christmas. Bless you John. 05 November 2011 - The Phoenix lost for the 2nd time in a week at the ROF. Despite enough chances against a sad looking CCM side. That's two games ina row where the Nix should have come away with the points. To be honest though, some of the football on display reminded me of the Keystone cops (Google it if you don't know whom Iam referring to.). we seriously need a 6'4 striker that can run fast. Greenacre is playing solo and heading the ball onto no one. Sanchez is a great partner whom plays behind Greenie and therefore missing those nod ons. I see so much potential but it isn't firing for some reason. I was thinking about this today. It all started when we lost Jon McCain. What he was on the pitch and off the pitch appears to be missing. Now for a mention of John "Gramps" Clifford. A QPR fan for more years than the clubs existence just about. He's just released a book called "QPR the Old Days" it deals with QPR history 1939 till 1970 (sequel coming?). Anyway, packed with a fans point of view of QPR and lots of photos. Books are 5 pounds & postage.. He'll even autpgraph them on request. The thing is, it is not a money making exercise for John. ALL money raised from the sale of the book goes to the QPR Tiger Cubs via the "QPR in the Community Trust". Kids whom suffer from Downs Syndrome(DS). A foreword from QPR Legend and goal winning scorer from the 1966/67 League Cup Final - Mark Lazarus and an introduction from former club secretary of many years, Ron Phillips. This is an excellence read & cause. It can make a difference. As I said, the Tiger Cubs get everything earned from the sales.! 02 November 2011 - Happy Birthday? Yeah right! anyway, time for an update. QPR avoided a complete thrashing that was on the cards the way spuds played in the first half. lucky to get away with a 3-1 defeat. Sorry to say it but changes need to be made. Regarding formation and the use of some players. Barton is NOT a right midfield/winger. he is a central midfielder. Derry sadly no longer has the legs against some of the bigger faster teams. - Well not for 90 anyway. The Phoenix were all over the Tards - Harry Kewell? Harry who?? So far this season, he's proved pretty ineffectual. I along with others couldn't believe how we hadn't scored 5 or 6 in the first half alone. To make matters worse or were the FAA just being a bunch of pricks, but why did we get Mr Gillette? The brother of the one whom had a shit game at our last home game. They love their cards do the Gillette brothers, especially dishing them out to Phoenix players. What is going on with the FAA? The standard of refereeing is the pits, as seen in other games last weekend. Chris Beath is definately the best of the bunch, Matthew Breeze in at number 2 and then a distant 3rd comes????? 25 October 2011 - I refrained from commenting on referee Gillett and hence no comments about last weekends game. The Nix this last weekend lost 1-0 to a decent Perth side and yes, our abysmal away form continues. Next up is Melbourne Victory, the return of Judas 2 and Harry "who are ya" Kewell. thus far he has not impressed and seems to have the attitude of "get out of my way, dont you know who I am?" attitude about him. Hopefully the boys will be up for it. Sadly Paul Ifill is out with a groin injury, although this does allow Daniel to continue in his good run of form. I think he's playing better this season than last year. Niggly injuries interferring with him. The new recruits so far have show some great possibilities and I'll be there cheering them on. Meanwhile, at Loftus Road QPR 1 Chelsea 0, I say it again, QPR 1 Chelsea 0. In a game where Chelsea earned and received 2 red cards, a further 7 yellow cards and spent the 2nd half with 9 players and still had the hand as QPR had gone to sleep, resting on their 10th minute penalty goal. Heidar Helguson scoring after being shoved in the back. Let them moan, but there is only one team in West London and they wear blue and white hoops! 10 October 2011 - All quiet on the QPR front with England etc involved in the European Championship qualification games. After the 6-0 spanking received at all places - Fulham, perhaps a quiet spell for reflection is what is needed. Taarabt scored a great 20 yard free kick against Tanzania. Meanwhile, the Phoenix open up their A League campaign by letting a very late slip allowing a share of the points. Great goal by Chris Greenacre & nicely set up by Manny in an overlapping run. Stability has hit the Nix off the field though with the consortium of owners. Ricki has hastily assembled 20 playing staff. (See the Phoenix Squad Page). Next up we're at the ROF for our first home game of the season. 29 September 2011 - A super draw against 12 man Aston Villa. We were all over them in the first half and should have had the points tied up by half time. Enter a certain 26 year old referee who wanted to be the center of attention. A weak penalty at best when even Villa were appealing for a corner and not a penalty. The two penalties turned down at the other end. One was dead easy to call and the other was 50/50 but still a hand ball by Villa. The referee quite rightly got slammed by Warnock and he was right too. Today it's announced a midweek game for the Phoenix in Dunedin. Not the best idea but then I don't mind Dunedin. However, more disturbingly is a game up in Dorkland. just how many bites of the cherry do that city deserve before people within football finally realise Aucklander's don't give a flying "F" about football as their two previous attempts at having a pro side have successfully proved? Dumb decision made by people whom really should know better. napier or Hamilton are two strong football areas. They deserved a chance. 18 September 2011 - WOW, a superb 3-0 win at Wolves. Joey leading by an Captains' example, the faurlin with a 20 yarder and finally DJ Campbell finishes it. great performance from a great squad. We should have wipe the floor earlier in the week with newcastle and this result shows we have bounced back from our game against Bolton. 3 clean sheets already - in just 5 games. Terry Sereposis - decision time due on Monday. Frankly, I am disgusted by the whole thing. The economic downturn hit everyone. Can you tell me what Millionaire businessman in this country actually pays their bills on time? They don't get to be millionaires by being generous and early. Perhaps the old boys establishment couldn't handle this "new upstart" moving in their circles. We know Terry has his problems/issues but in my humble opinion someone has had it in for him for a very long time. The footballing public, especially those in wellington, owe him big time. Where did all those fans disappear after the first few games? I haven't missed one A League home game yet (Unless they have one in Auckland this season) and I've been there on a shitty, rainy Wednesday night, having to get up at 5am the next morning to go to work. There were around 4,000 fans at the game. Terry financed the start and financed 4 seasons. As the majority financier, of course he was in the public eye. Should he lose his franchise licence and one of the two alleged groups take over - hopefully Sam Morgan's, I would like to see Terry given an honorary chairmanship. The other groups seems to be driven by an ego led person rather than one with footballs best interests at heart. The Wellington Phoenix, need to stay in Wellington. Auckland have had two bites of the Cherry and their 900 strong attendances reflect just how passionate New Zealand's biggest city - so we keep getting reminded of, are about a football team. So they can go and get stuffed. Terry? He has done his bit. He has fronted up. Some people have very small minds and even shorter memories. Some in the media need to look at what their positive contribution to football in New Zealand has been and they might just find the cupboard bare. Terry, from this fan, thanks heaps for all that you have done and helped achieve with the Wellington Phoenix. I won't forget the efforts. You da Man! 12 September 2011 - The day after the 10th anniversary of the worst day in modern US history and things carry on. Some very moving tributes made. If it had been military targets selected, the whole scenario would have been so much different. RIP to those deceased and my sincerest condolences to those whom have lost someone from their lives. Well now, QPR's first "live" performance on TV here since 1982's ripped off loss to Spuds in that years FA Cup final. A lot of years in between drinks but as I finish work about an hour before the game. I'm rapt. Gonna be an interesting QPR line-up and Newcastle always give us a tough game. Anyone remember 5-5? I do. 01 September 2011 - It's started. Joey Barton, Luke Young, Armand Traore, Shaun Wright-Phillips. We have signed 17 year old 6'6" tall goalkeeper Tommaso Trani, Anton Ferdinand and Jason Puncheon.. Antonio German released from contract, Peter Ramage on loan to Palace. Vine gone to Exeter to find a worthy level. Word is, he now wants to sue QPR for basically finishing his career. Perhaps he should be suing Matt Pickens, the USA goalkeeper whom was responsible in that training ground incident. 27 August 2011 - so Joey Barton has joined us. He is a player of great skill and a side to him that makes you cringe. I hope Neil Warnock can keep him under control, much like Taarabt. I do question the wages though. Tony Fernandes and Mr Mittal are bank rolling this one. They need to be, anywhere from 60-80k per week is suicide unless they have Champions League in mind. The clubs stadium is just not big enough to support such wages. next Up, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Scott Parker and some decent defenders. As a side note, a couple of days back broadcaster Graham Moody drowned in a surfing accident off the Gold Coast. 60 years young and he certainly didn't look it. My sincerest condolences to his close friends and family. I/we will miss you Moods, every Saturday afternoon, covering local Rugby for NewstalkZB. You were awesome and so descriptive and analytical and unbiased. RIP. 21 August 2011 - A 1-0 win at Goodison Park - much needed grab for points has begun. We has spells of dominance but in reality, Everton also showed some weak areas that Neil will need to address. OK, Everton had an off day. they were unlucky not to get a penalty after a shove and the Cross Bar denied them too. But these are exactly the type of games we need to win. A calm has risen over QPR fans of late. Tony Fernandes is making the right noises to everyone concerned, Now to see him deliver. Whatever happens can it be worse than the previous two?? 19 August 2011 - So Tony Fernandes has bought a 66% stake in QPR, there will be no more Bernie Ecclestone, Flavio Briatore and latest news is Gianni Paladini is gone too. Amit Bhatia is to be vice chairman. Hopefully a clean sweep will also involve the seriously bad PR department employed by the former owners at Loftus Road. A review of the ticket prices is in the works and Neil Warnock and the coaches have been told that they can draw up a real list of players wanted. Interesting times ahead for QPR fans. one that I believe will be a positive one with no more boutique bullshit! This website is dedicated to QPR FC, The Wellington Phoenix FC, Daniel Cortes. Queens Park Rangers have been part of my life for 36 years and the Wellington Phoenix including STAR player Daniel Cortes, since its inception. I hope you all find this site interesting. This site hopes to honour the spirit displayed by QPR Fan Neil Roberts (RIP 20 Feb) 2011. A friend that will be missed by many.
